Memories Of Bayside, Melbourne by John Darcey

Features

ARTIST NOTES: Whereas my paintings are largely figurative I am greatly concerned with the conceptual aspects of my work. The conceptual/symbolic elements in my work include, not just the choice of subject itself but also the choice of colours and painting techniques used.
I am very interested in exploring a variety of textures to enhance the visual effect but also to contribute to the concepts. I want my work to be accessible to the viewer without the need for an overly intellectualised didactic.
“Memories of Bayside – to share” sprung from one of my visits to the Bayside area when I shared the best bouillabaisse with a lifelong friend, an enduring memory.
The turquoise of the pan represents the shallower waters of Port Phillip Bay and contrasts with the shellfish, applied with a knife to give an inorganic feel. A rough chaotic deep green background suggests the petulant dangerous ocean I know well.

ARTIST BIO

I am a Western Australian male who has had a lifelong interest and involvement in the visual arts and crafts.

\r\n

Post secondary school I studied a Diploma of Fine Art, Western Australian Institute of Technology, I was fortunate to have studied under many notable Australian artists such as Guy Grey-Smith, Ian Wroth.

\r\n

I worked in the picture framing and commercial gallery scene in Perth, owning my own framing business, Art Presentations.

\r\n

I moved to rural WA in the early 1980’s participating in numerous mixed exhibitions in Perth and Geraldton. I had a permanent one man exhibition space in my own town during the early 1990’s. I was involved in designing and making furniture using WA hardwoods, mainly Jarrah.

\r\n

Throughout my life I have had a strong involvement the Western Rock Lobster & Wet Fishing Industries. For a decade and a half I fished the Central West Coastal zone, the infamous Abrolhos Islands and the treacherous Big Bank zone. This work was often performed under very challenging and dangerous conditions.

\r\n

After a decade of volunteer ambulance service as a Senior Officer, Trainer and Administrator, I was very honoured to be made a Member of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, The Priory in Australia. (Order of St John, MStJ), for my ‘exceptional service to my community and humanity’.

\r\n

Following a permanent back injury in late 2013, I returned to full time painting, working mostly in pastel and oils. In 2014, for the first time in my life, I entered a few art prizes.
